I ordered a basswood pre-routed Warmoth Explorer bass body and reshaped it a bit better, adding a much deeper cutaway for my bigger hands with a little taste of an Iceman horn as well. Added an upper bevel for added comfort, as well as some cool looks, and the most striking feature on the body is the 'handle' at the back. I spent such a long time carving that out to my hand, giving it an almost Ibanez Xyphos look as well. Its only equipped with one knob and an output jack, but its well grounded and shielded inside- so much so, that it doesn't hum! I sprayed the finish on and then distressed it, throughout the body, neck, and headstock to replicate having resprayed clear over a worn down paint job, and I'm really happy with the results there as well. The sound is nice and deep, almost over-driven, thanks to the setup... I've turned plenty of heads with this baby, both in how well it plays and how unusual- all thanks to Warmoth for the supplies!!!" height="425px" width="200px" img_w="279" img_h="425" style="height:425px; width:200px;"/> Tim Smyser<br />This is an update to my previously listed Koa G5 Bass. Pickups were recently changed to Bardens. This is what I originally had in mind, but 5-string Bardens weren’t available a the time. This bass features a much recontoured G5 Hawai’ian Koa wood body to fit me like a glove with a curly Koa top, Wenge neck, Ziricote fret board, Hipshot short-shaft tuners, TK bridge, Ivory nut, Barden pickups with Hawai’ian Milo wood surrounds, and a 5-way Switchcraft switch. 500K Bourns pots were used for Master Volume & Tone with a 300K CTS for the Blender allowing 11 totally different sounds. A Mallory Volume Kit and Hovland Musicap were installed, and wiring was all NASA grade silvered copper. Finish is ultra-thin Nitro. There is no finish on the neck and fret board, just oil. My luthier, Larry Smoak at Wooden Wizard Guitars (http://www.woodenwizardguitars.com/index.html) fabricated the Pau shell TRC. He is also a machinist and set the neck with machine screws & inserts as well as machining a brass input jack cup. The pickups were also set in with machine screws and inserts. It is incredibly alive and vibrant, slick, fast, and solid with tone and sustain to die for. Even unplugged, it resonates in your bones. Of special note are the two pieces of Koa used for the head stock and the control cavity cover from a block gifted to me by an old Hawai’ian woodworker named Cap years ago. My special thanks to Dan Allen for putting up with months of questions and helping me with wood suggestions. As a guitar AND bass player like me, his input proved extremely valuable. The neck and body couldn’t have been a more perfect fit. Warmoth was supportive every step of the way. Also, have a look at my just finished Koa Telecaster! Life is good. The back of the neck is vintage tint gloss with matching peghead with the body. Electronics are Bartolini MM + J with the MM closer to the bridge than standard. This gives a nice 70's growl. The neck is made of maple with an Indian rosewood fingerboard and stainless steel frets and has the burl maple laminate on a Warmoth headstock. The neck and body both finished with a clear gloss. Pickups are currently passive Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders, but active EMGs will be fitted when they arrive. It has an Audere preamp with 4 way EQ powered by 18 volts.<br> Warmoth’s workmanship is simply outstanding, and the bass sounds and plays superbly. I couldn’t be happier with it. It was built in 1997. I toiled over the design for months editing and reediting until I finally decided my concept was never going to dramatically change. I wanted a nonstandard design that remained functional. As you can see it isn't radical but omitting a top horn was different enough. When I received the body there was a note from the tech that built it that read something like, 'There may be a balance issue with this body not having a top horn'. I realized the issue at the design phase but figured I'd deal with it. It turned out that indeed the bass is quite unbalanced but it sounds so amazing and is so much fun to play that I really don't care. Originally it had a maple/ebony fretless neck that I switched out with the maple/ebony fretted one pictured here. The body is alder with a zebrawood top. I liked the fretted neck so much that the fretess one went on another bass I built for one of my students. After the parts had shipped, I suddenly realized upon opening the box that I had forgotten to draw in the pickup hole dimensions on the submitted design! Needless to say I learned a lot on this project and I encourage anyone who is thinking of building, put your guitar together yourself. It will truly make you one with your instrument. I also bought the Alder body blank from Warmoth, and most of the hardware. The Gotoh bridges that they carry on this site are amazing. The pickup is a vintage Gibson Grabber Sliding Pickup from the early 70's that I bought off of Ebay. <br> <br> <br> This is my third bass from Warmoth, and I will never buy from anywhere else again. The service is awesome and the products are top notch. Billy Brock<br />Its called the JC bass. The body is tung oil finish. The body is swapash with 1 monster tone emg pick up. It is a cut away back, The design in the body are cat tail inlays, done with inlace. The neck is maple and ziricote, with a swapash peg head. my sons comment as a bass player and also my brothers as another bass player, we think the tone of the bass is better than a warwick, and most other makes and models. Much better being as my son plays of on a warwick, he told me he would be playing this one in the band more often. It's neck dimensions are quite similar with 8 string models, so I've decided to have it converted. Now it has Schaller 8 string bridge, new nut and tuners. So far the neck is stable and it sounds great. The electronics are stock Washburn active.<br> <br> Warmoth support was great during the whole project, especially when dealing with overseas deliveries. The sound is amazing, kind of like a fretless piano. It looks prettier than my girlfriend before last, and always turns heads.<br> <br> I was a bit intimidated by the idea of building my own at first, but I'm so glad I took the plunge. Ty Murdock<br />This 8 string bass was a custom order from Warmoth Guitar Products. The body is a heavy Mahogany Contoured Custom Tele Bass with the standard Warmoth 5 piece Bubinga/Maple neck with Pau Ferro fretboard, Paua face dots, and custom headstock shape. The neck is secured to the body with a 6 bolt counter sink pattern and has the double battery box for 18 volt wiring of the electronics. The electronics are the EMG 35cs neck and 35tw (switchable from dual coil to J single coil) and has a volume for each pickup and the 3 band BQC control on two concentric pots. The bridge is the comfortable Schaller S471 and the tuners are Hipshot ultra lights with a graphite nut. The bass has been strung like the Rickenbacker 8 string with the standard string in front of the octave string. This allows you to play the fundamental string without hitting the octave string. The bass is beautiful and sounds even better! Thanks to all of the great people at Warmoth for their superb help to create a classic. I was amazed at the quality of Warmoths parts, everything was much batter than i expected. Pretty much all the wood and hardwar was from Warmouth, although i did choose to do my own U.V. proof finish becasue the sun can turn this wood brown, and no-one wants that.<br><br> I definatly plan on making another bass soon, im never buying another bass, Warmoth is that good. Maple neck with rosewood fretboard, Warmoth Straight headstock. Hardware - BML tuners, Seymour Duncan pickups (J PU in bridge position and MM in center position). The volume and tone circuit uses dual concentric pots, a volume and tone for each PU. The electronics are wired in stereo for amplification to two different amps, and the mini switch changes operation from stereo to mono for use with a conventional single bass amp. I was after something which had the bite and attack of a 4001/4003 series instrument, and this combination comes very close to it. Thank you. Wayne Zito<br />This is my latest project, a walnut Deluxe V with birdseye maple neck and an ebony fingerboard. No grain filler was used, and the body was dyed with a combination of pigments. The body and fingerboard were finished with Glasurit urethane. The Glasurit formula is expensive, but has good fill properties and produces a high gloss. The fumes are terrible, even with a vapor mask, so be careful if you use this stuff without an adequate exhaust system, and you particularly if you have asthma.. LIKE ME. However, it was worth it to breathe like a mustard gas victim for a few days. The pickups and preamp are Bartolini.<br><br> This neck set up perfectly, with no dips or high spots beyond the effective range of the truss rod. This is particularly important if you like to set your neck up with very little relief and low action as I do, for a uniform growl.<br><br> Thank you so much for the excuisitely crafted parts. The neck is a "J" bass style in quarter swan Eastern Rock Maple with an Ebony fret board (sans markers to emphasize the ebony color), with reverse headstock and stainless steel fret wire with a Corian nut. Together with the electronics Warmoth sold me at very competitive prices this bass is Big, Bad, and Beautiful.

I am very satisfied with the result, although I may replace the neck with a Maple/Pau Ferrin neck for closer color match, then use this neck for a Maple body (maybe a Mockingbird?).<br><br> The components fit perfectly. The neck required less than one turn for adjustment, and the intonation took maybe ten minutes to get right. The bridge height adjustments took another five minutes. All in all, from start to finish, I may have spent 20 hours getting this bass ready. Once I got the action set, it's far faster than my regular bass.<br><br> I took it to a major Bass Guitar outlet, and the owner (who was curious about Warmoth Quality) was very impressed. I got all the parts from warmoth, except for the pickups wich are EMG-PJs. The body is a maple Eagle, and the neck is Warmoth maple with a rosewood fretboard.The bridge is a Schaller 463. I stained the body green. This bass has an amazing sound to it, as well as amazing harmonics. Thank you Warmoth!<br><br> I am looking forward to building more basses in the future. Dustin Peterson<br />This isn't my first bass, but my first experience building one from Warmoth. It's a 5 string Deluxe with the Basslines music man pickup and preamp. The body is all walnut, which helps it look and sound great. The neck is bocote (bought off the Showcase), and didn't need to be oiled and it plays really fast. It's also heavy but it helps it sound great, and the fretboard is ebony. The pickup is wired in parallel for more treble (taking away bass), but there's plenty of bass to add with the preamp, and it sounds great for any style of music. With the solid neck it's easy to get a slap sound, and lots of sustain, without fretbuzz. I found graphite necks not as stable as this one, and I'm eventually going to replace my other bass with a Warmoth neck. My next bass will most likely be a Warmoth, because they sound and play great, and I'll still have cash after buying it. Mike <br />Here is the greatest bass guitar that I have ever played, with much thanks to Warmoth. Instead of pulling my hair out looking at Jackson custom shop prices, I found some great parts and did myself a great Explorer. It even has 5-strings, which more or less is all that I play. It has a fat sound with all the wood in the body, the neck is fat and silky, just how I like it. All the hardware is in immaculate shape after a year and a half of musical abuse. It is so great, my cat even likes it. Pete Haider<br /> Randall Owen<br /> This is my first Warmoth project guitar. I found the Warmoth body on Ebay a few months ago. It came with the Bartolini Bass pickups and most of the hardware. I picked up a Warmoth P-Bass neck on Ebay also. The Strat neck I bought from Warmoth new, along with the Kluson tuners and bone nut for it, along with a few other hardware items. The body, swamp ash, was unfinished, so I gave it 3 coats of Tung oil and finished it off with 3 coats of polyurethane. I had a set of Gibson 490's lying around the house that I wasn't using, so I installed them into the guitar side. In order to save space I used the stacked pots, 2 for each neck. I wired the necks so that they could both be active at the same time using a Gibson 3 way selector switch. The necks, of course, each have their own output jack. The guitar side of this axe really cranks while the bass has a real sweet tone. If I ever feel the urge to build another axe, Warmoth's going to get my business!
