Neck Dimensions

The bolt-on electric bass neck was pioneered by Fender® in the 1960's. Today Fender® and many other manufacturers still use Fender's® original neck and neck-pocket dimensions. They are not universal, however. Even among Fender® products neck/body mismatches are possible if care is not taken. Accurate measurement is the only way to ensure compatibility of parts.

All Warmoth parts are built to USA Fender's® original/vintage neck-heel and neck-pocket dimensions, except when noted. The critical dimensions for SSB Tiltback necks are shown below:

Warmoth Neck Pockets

Warmoth Short Scale Bass neck heels and neck pockets are always a perfect with each other, but are not compatible with any other brands or manufacturers. Dimensions are shown below:

SSB Tiltback Construction

At the heart of every SSB Tiltback bass neck is Warmoth's double-expanding truss rod. It is installed in a flat slot directly under the fingerboard and consists of two long shafts which are welded together at the heel end of the neck. At the other end a tube is welded to the top shaft. The bottom shaft passes through the tube and ends with a threaded adjustment nut that is accessible through an opening at the headstock.

As the adjustment nut is tightened it draws the bottom shaft outward and pushes inward on the tube attached to the top shaft. This pressure forces the rod upwards in the middle and downwards at the ends. As the adjustment nut is loosened the neck relaxes back towards its neutral position.

The Warmoth Double Expanding truss rod gives you:

  • Extreme stability that almost never needs adjusting.
  • Increased mass for long sustain and no dead spots.
  • A neck that won't distort over time due to inward pressure on the neck wood.

Fingerboard Slab

SSB Tiltback necks use a standard 1/4” fingerboard slab, and are the standard 1” thickness at the heel.

Scale Length

Scale length effects fret spacing and overall reach distance. Warmoth offers two SSB scale lengths, which are interchangeable with each other on Warmoth SSB bodies. Warmoth SSB scale length options include:

    The SSB Neck Contour is a comfortable and quick-fretting shape that feels familiar to most players. Compared to the modern J-Bass® "C" shape it is the same width at the nut, but just a bit thinner front to back. The contour is identical on SSB 30" and 32" scale necks.

      Precut & Installed Nuts

      We have built a system for precision cutting nuts to fit our necks. The cutting and shaping is done by a bench top CNC mill. Every nut is custom cut to the specific neck dimensions with the result being a nearly perfect nut, compensated for fret height, nut width, fingerboard radius, etc. Nuts must be ordered at the same time as the neck to ensure compatibility.

      Binding and Fret Ends

      Our fingerboard binding is installed before the frets. The fret ends then extend over it to the edge of the fingerboard. Laying the binding under the frets, rather than on the outside, results in a wider, smoother playing surface. It also makes fret maintenance easier and less expensive.

        Fingerboard Radius Explained

        The term "fingerboard radius" describes the curvature or arc of the fingerboard across the width of the neck. The measurement is arrived at by extending the arc of the fingerboard to form an imaginary circle around the neck. The radius of this circle is the fingerboard radius.

        The SSB Tiltback fingerboard radius is 10", the same as our full scale J Bass® and P Bass® necks. It is very comfortable to play on and will feel familiar to most bassists.

          Warranty Information: Tuner bushings from different manufacturers are not always identical in size. If the tuner bushings you are using don’t fit into the tuner routs fairly easily do not force them. It is necessary to open the hole up slightly. Headstocks broken as a result of forcing bushings into them are not covered under warranty.

          A non-glossy, matte finish. The feel is very smooth and fast. The look and feel are similar to the modern Fender® neck finish.

          A non-glossy, matte finish. The feel is very smooth and fast. Amber tint is added to the finish to a achieve an aged appearance. It is perfect for those that want the quick feel of a modern neck, with a more vintage look. This is not a reliced finish. It is a tinted color.

          A high-gloss, wet looking finish with amber tint added to a create an aged appearance. This is the look associated with vintage Fender® instruments. It is not a reliced finish. It is a tinted color.

          Vintage Tint Gloss

          Warranty Information: For a valid warranty your neck must be covered with a hard finish. Oils do not meet this requirement. The finish must be sufficiently thick to completely cover the wood so that a player’s hand touches only finish, never wood. Finishes done by Warmoth meet this warranty requirement. Hard finishes applied by you or a third party may also meet this requirement.

          All our necks are dipped in an oil based penetrating sealer that is compatible with virtually all secondary finishes. This provides enhanced stability, but it is not adequate protection for playing. If you purchase an unfinished Maple, Mahogany, or Koa neck we strongly recommend you apply a hard finish. We understand the attraction of unfinished or lightly oiled necks. Unfortunately, they are much more susceptible to moisture-related warping and twisting. Our experience is that hard finished necks seldom warp, while about 10% of unfinished or oiled necks eventually do.

          Headstock Veneer

          You can choose exotic woods veneers for your headstock to emulate the look of a Laminate Top body. A Headstock Veneer adds a boutique, balanced look to any instrument. Available in these materials:

          Headstock Veneer

          A thin wood laminate approximately .030" (1mm) thick is applied to the face of the headstock. On straight headstocks it covers the end of the fingerboard. On Tiltback headstocks it ends at the nut slot. A wide range of finish options is available.
