The SSB G4 is the short scale version of our G4 bass body, patterned after our flagship Gecko bass line. It is smaller and lighter than the long scale version, but still substantial in feel and perfectly balanced. Our wide range of options allows you to choose your favorite bridge, pickups, body wood, and more. Warmoth SSB G4 bodies are built with all the craftsmanship and attention to detail Warmoth is famous for.

Alder

Appearance: Light tan with little or no distinct grain lines.

Tone: Full and balanced, with equal doses of lows, mids and highs.

Weight: Lighter weight (about four pounds for a Strat® body).

Finish: Closed grain and easy to finish. Works well for sunbursts or solid colors.

Alder is our most popular wood and it grows all around us here in Washington State. It has been the mainstay for Fender® bodies for years, and its characteristic tone has been an enduring part of popular music.

Mahogany

Appearance: Reddish-brown, with a fine, straight grain.

Tone: Warm and full with good sustain.

Weight: Medium to heavy (Strat® bodies average 5 lbs. or more).

Finish: Grain is easy to fill. Looks good with clear or transparent red finish.

Mahogany’s full-bodied sound is associated with some of the most famous guitar tones in rock music. It is the favored tone wood of the Gibson® brand name.

Swamp Ash

Appearance: Creamy color with distinct grain patterns.

Tone: Balanced brightness and warmth, with a lot of "pop".

Weight: Fairly light weight (normally under five pounds for a Strat® body).

Finish: Porous and takes a lot of finish. Its beautiful grain patterns make it a very nice choice for transparent finishes.

Swamp Ash is our second most popular wood. It is a very musical wood, and was used in many of Fender’s legendary instruments from the 50’s.

Appearance: Deep shades of brown, with a rich, thick grain.

Tone: Big and warm, with a smooth high end roll off.

Indian Rosewood Tele® bodies were made popular in the 70s by George Harrison of the Beatles. Rosewood is always a good candidate for hollow or chambered builds due to its weight.

Basswood

Appearance: White, often with green mineral streaks in it.

Tone: Growly and warm, with good mids.

Weight: Fairly light weight (normally under four pounds for a Strat® body).

Finish: Closed-grain, but absorbs a lot of finish. A good choice for solid finishes since there is little grain figure.

Basswood is a favorite among shredders for its defined sound and the way it cuts through a mix. It is quite soft, however, and does not take abuse well.

Black Korina

Appearance: Olive color with black streaking. Has a handsome "aged" look.

Tone: Very similar to Mahogany with added mids.

Weight: Medium weight, with lighter pieces available occasionally.

Finish: Naturally waxy in feel. Works well with oil finishes.

Black Korina’s true name is Limba from Africa. It is an excellent tonal choice for hollow chambered bodies.

Appearance: White, with light grain patterns.

Tone: Bright, with a good bite and attack that isn’t brittle.

Weight: Medium to heavy.

Finish: Dense, closed grain that is easy to finish. Looks great with clear or transparent colors.

Maple can range from plain to beautifully figured, and grows all around us here in Washington state.

Poplar

Appearance: Gray/ green in color, with little grain figure.

Tone: Full and balanced, similar to Alder.

Weight: Slightly heavier than Alder, in general.

Finish: Closed grain accepts finish well. Lack of grain figure makes it best with solid color finishes.

Book Matching

Most laminate tops are done in "bookmatch" fashion. This is accomplished by first sawing a plank lengthwise. The resulting halves are opened like a book and glued in the center. This yields a symmetrical pattern along the body centerline. Occasionally laminate tops are created with a single piece of wood, but it is rare.

Alignment

The laminate top is then affixed to the body slab. If the body is two-piece construction the glue joints align in the center. If the body is three-piece, the glue joints are staggered.

Drop Tops

Our laminate tops are 1/8" thick. We have developed a process that forms these tops to the forearm and face contours of a guitar body. The resulting laminate-top bodies have contours identical to those of solid bodies. These are known as "Drop Tops."

Tone

Unlike carved top laminates, which are typically 3/4" thick, thin laminate tops do not alter the tone of an instrument. An alder body with our 1/8" thick top will still sound like an alder body, but with the appearance of your favorite exotic wood. The neck still attaches to the core wood, and the bridge screws are anchored through the top into the same core.

    All bodies with rear-routed control cavities include the necessary covers and stainless steel mounting screws.

    • Screw holes are pre-drilled for easy assembly
    • Cover material is .090 Black Solid Matte vinyl

    In bodies with rear routed control cavities you can choose to keep or omit any of the control holes.

    • Control holes are 3/8" diameter to accommodate standard size pots

    Control Cavity Wiring Channels

    The wiring channels on Warmoth bodies are always pre-drilled for quick and easy assembly. Pickup wiring channels are a generous 1/4". Ground wire channels are 1/8."

    Rear Rout Wiring Channels

    All necessary wiring channels leading to the rear-routed control cavity are provided.

    Body Contour Options

    Body contours improve comfort and playability. All Warmoth SSB bodies come standard with Forearm and Tummy Cuts. A Heel Contour may also be added for better access to the upper frets.

    A Side Input Jack Rout is optional on front routed bodies, but standard and highly recommended on rear-routed bodies. It provides greater strength and a more "boutique" look. Options include:

    Side Jack Location

    The Side Jack Rout is located along the edge of the guitar, on the underside of the lower bout near the Control Cavity. The inside surface of the Control Cavity adjacent to the rout is flat for easy installation of input jacks that require washers and nuts.

    3/4" (19mm) Side Jack Hole

    This is the standard rout used on bodies with 3/8" or 1/2" edge radius.

    • A football style jack plate is commonly used with this rout. Square jack plates can also be used on bodies with a 3/16" edge radius (Tele®, Cabronita, etc.).
    • Fits Warmoth mono jacks and many (but not all) others.

    1/2" (13mm) Side Jack Hole

    This rout is generally to accomodate "deep panel" jacks, where the jack must pass through a thick section of wood to reach the control cavity.

    • For rear routed bodies only.
    • No mounting plate is required.
    • Often an "O" ring is used under the face of the jack to keep it from rotating.
    • Jack depths vary by brand. Check that yours is long enough to reach the control rout area.

    7/8" (22mm) Side Jack Hole

    This rout size is typically used when a standard Tele® input cup or Electrosocket is desired. Normally for bodies with 3/16" edge radius (Tele®, Cabronita, etc.).

    • Also available on bodies with 1/2" or 3/8" edge radii if ordered before finish is applied.
    • A square jack mounting plate can be used on bodies with a 3/16" edge radius.
    • A football-style jack may be used on all bodies.

    No Side Jack Hole

    If your body is top routed and you are using a pickguard or plate-mounted input jack for a tradtional look, no side input jack rout is necessary.

    Neck Mounting Holes

    Several different Neck Mounting Hole configurations are available to accommodate whatever your project requires. Options include:

    • Standard 4 Bolt
    • No Mounting Holes (Filled)
    • No Mounting Holes (Index Hole only)

    Neck Mounting Holes

    We use the upper left hole of a standard 4 bolt neck mount as an index positioning hole during our CNC process. It must be drilled. If your project requires no mounting holes we can leave the other three holes undrilled, and either fill the index hole or ship it to you unfilled.

    All four Neck Mounting Holes are drilled 3/16" in diameter.

    No Mounting Holes (Filled)

    The index hole is filled with wood of similar appearance, but the spot is still visible on close inspection.

    Battery Box Routs

    Active pickups and electronics often require one or two 9-volt batteries onboard your bass or guitar for power. A battery box makes accessing and changing them much easier.

    • Our battery box routs are only compatible with the battery boxes we sell.
    • All necessary wiring holes are pre-drilled for easy installation.
    • Single or double rout same price.

    Can you change a dead battery on a dark stage, between songs, in 30 seconds or less? With a battery box you can. They are much faster and more convenient than pulling off your strings and a pickguard, or unscrewing a rear rout cover.

    Natural Masked Binding

    Natural Masked Binding is not actually binding at all, but it has a similar look. It is a narrow line around the perimeter of a Laminate Top that is masked off during the painting process and then finished clear. The result is a subtle trim that makes figured tops look fantastic.     A Pinstripe Accent Line is not binding, but it serves a similar purpose. It is a very thin line around the perimiter of a Laminate Top guitar body that creates a pleasing, bordered look. It differs from Natural Mask Binding in two ways. First, a Pinstripe is much thinner - only about 0.030" thick. Second, it is not done during the finishing process, but during construction. A contrasting color of wood is sandwiched between the body wood and Laminate Top. Once the body is shaped and sanded it forms a perfect line around the perimeter of the Laminate Top. Options for Pinstripe Accent Lines include:

    On Laminate Top guitars with Dye or Burst finishes the Perimeter Finish Option lets you decide how the color from the back will join with the Dye or Burst in the front. Perimeter Finish options include:

    Custom Burstover

    The back color wraps around the side of the guitar and fades over the finish on the front. The back color can be solid, transparent, or a burst that matches the top.

    Clean Line

    add $55

    The back color wraps around the side and meets the Dye or Burst Finish at the seam of the Laminate Top, forming a distinct line. This involves additional steps in the finishing process, but the result is clean and classy.

    Natural Masked Binding

    Natural Masked Binding is not actually binding at all, but it has a similar look. It is a narrow line around the perimeter of a Laminate Top that is masked off during the painting process and then finished clear. The result is a subtle trim that makes figured tops look fantastic. Options include:
